Gettysburg’s Offensive Outburst Leads to Season-Opening Win

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Gettysburg College men’s soccer team jumped out to an impressive start to the 2008 season with a dominating offensive display against Marymount University, beating the helpless Saints 5-1 in the first contest of the University of Mary Washington Classic on Saturday, August 30. Gettysburg (1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Marymount (0-1) was able to respond. Junior Frank Spada (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) kick-started the attack with his first career goal in the 17th minute via an assist from classmate Ryan Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville). The Bullets tacked on one more goal before the end of the opening half when first-year Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) converted a pass from junior Rich Kampert (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) at 42:17. No time was wasted in the final stanza by Gettysburg as the Bullets found the mark twice in the first six minutes. Senior Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) signed the scorebook for his first goal of the season in the 47th minute and junior Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) followed just four minutes later with a score. Sophomore Teddy Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) assisted on both Bullet tallies. After Marymount cracked the scoring column at 53:38, Bayon polished off the scoring with his second goal from a pass by Menge at 61:11. The goal pushed the Gettysburg senior into seventh on the school’s all-time lists for points (69) and goals (30). Senior Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) made two saves in the opening 80:42 to earn the victory, while classmate Jeff Greenlaw (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished off the match in goal for Gettysburg. The Bullets held sizeable advantages in the shot department (19-4) and on corner kicks (7-0) in the contest. Bayon led the way with four shots, while Hynes and fellow freshman Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) each attempted three.

McKenna Leads Bullets Past Royals in OT

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) picked the perfect opportunity to score her first career goal at Gettysburg College as her shot in the 94th minute propelled the women’s soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite University at Clark Field on Saturday, August 30. Gettysburg (1-0) had a fair share of opportunities to jump on the board throughout the contest, taking a dozen more shots than the visitors (17-5), but Eastern Mennonite (0-2) goalkeeper Abi Diffenbach stopped eight would-be goals in regulation. The Royals nearly ended the match in the final minute as all-conference forward Katie Lamm, who scored the team’s first goal of the season against No. 2 Messiah on Friday, corralled the ball on the Bullets’ side of the field and went one-on-one with Gettysburg senior goalie Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity). St. Pierre waited patiently for her moment to strike and timed it perfectly, smothering the ball just as Lamm was about to make a move around. The Orange & Blue went on the offensive early in the extra session as freshman Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) sent a shot sailing wide of the goal in the opening minute. Gettysburg regained possession of the ball and following a Royal foul, set up for a free kick about 30 yards outside the box. The ensuing kick found plenty of bodies at the top of the box before Montague chipped it with her head up and over the defensive line to McKenna. The Bullet junior controlled the ball just outside and in front of the left post and slotted the ball past the keeper’s out-stretched hands and into the bottom right corner. St. Pierre made one save en route to her 16th career shutout. Senior Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the offense with four shots, while Montague and seniors Whitney Odell (Andover, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) and Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) each managed three.
